Simplicity

I learned how to make things smaller.

Literally everything feels so chaotic and so much feels out of my control lately. So I’ve been focusing on the small things. The things I can touch. The things I can do. The things that ask nothing of me except that I be there.

And somehow, they carry me through.

Because in those moments, I can make movement. I can be with my thoughts and learn new things. I can put my hands in the dirt and feel connected again.

What’s interesting is that there was a time right after my divorce, I would do these same things and I was filled with anger and resentment. I would dread them because I believed they were supposed to be someone else’s job.

I needed those moments to mean something. I needed them to prove that I had been left with too much, that I was doing more than I should have to do, that something had been taken from me. I made myself the victim of those moments because, at the time, it was easier to feel wronged than to feel the weight of how much my life had changed and the decisions I had made, boldly for my future.

And there was truth in the hurt. There was a lot that felt unfair.

But somewhere along the way, something shifted.

The more I’m focusing on making things smaller, the more I’m realizing that the small things are actually all I really want. They’re everything.

They remind me about simplicity. They remind me that things don’t have to be so serious all the time. They remind me that there is so much beauty in the ordinary.

When you do the work, you don’t always know that you’re changing. You just turn around one day and notice that you have.

Simplicity has become my high expectation. It’s my goal. Not because I want less from life. Because I want to feel more of it.

Less is not more.

Less is everything.
